Ana Cichowicz

Ana Cichowicz

Ana Cichowicz is a Brazilian artist and social anthropologist based in Berlin. She has extensive fieldwork experience with Kalderash Romani people in Brazil and Argentina. Her PhD research explored cinema, foreignness, and world-making practices through the films of Algerian Romani filmmaker Tony Gatlif.

After completing her PhD,  Ana moved to Italy and later to Germany. It was during this migration process that her photographic practice intensified.

In 2022, Ana began to take photography more seriously, driven by the desire not only to study images academically but also to explore the practice of art-making.

Ana's work emerges from dialogues between art, philosophy, and anthropology. Her research interests focus on world-making practices, environmental practices, foreignness and migration, and the poetics of everyday street life.Whether working with photo performance, documentary photography, or street photography, her practice is marked by a constant reflection on the condition of the image itself.

Ana seeks not only to capture scenes but also to open breaches—fissures that cut through the image—where reflections on the process of creating images and, consequently, creating worlds can emerge. The ambiguity surrounding what is real in her street photos comes from the elements she encounters along the way—like a sticker on a windowpane or a broken traffic sign—that she integrates through careful framing and perspective, without using digital manipulation.

Her photos have been exhibited in galleries, festivals, and biennials across Australia, Austria, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and Singapore. Ana is a curator and an arts and humanities researcher at Street Macadam, where she conducts in-depth interviews and writes profiles of photographers and artists for the platform.
