OKTOBERFEST (Munich October festival, beer festival)

The Oktoberfest is the world's largest festival and is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, for 16 days, with more than six million international and national visitors attending the event.

In this 5-day workshop we offer a unique experience to let off steam photographically. Whether people in traditional costumes or events throughout the city, the variety of photographic motifis is endless. You'll have the opportunity to explore any photographic style. From documentation, street storytelling, to shooting with the flash, there is something for everyone.

Together with 2 local guides and street photographer Agnes Burger and Ludwig Van Borkum accompanied by Vincenzo Barone, you will get the chance to expand your creative possibilities, improve your skills, learn new approches, or improve your unique way of shooting, get feedback and enjoy the experience to shoot on the world largest Volksfest.

The City of Munich also has a lot to offer outside of the festival events. A beautiful old town, the Viktualienmarkt, the English Garden with the surfing wave and the Chinese Tower, countless beer gardens, historical buildings, the Olympic Park and much more. We will visite all of this places together in these 5 days and experience unforgettable moments.

1-1 Shooting sessions

We offer you a unique workshop experience led by three talented and renowned photographers. 

The group of 8 to 12 participants will be divided into three smaller groups. Each group will change mentors daily, allowing you to experience different approaches to street photography and learn how to approach people and work the scene effectively. This rotation ensures that you will gain diverse perspectives and techniques, enhancing your skills and especially your creative eye.

By the end of the workshop, you will have developed a well-rounded understanding of street photography, ready to apply these insights to your own journey.

Discovering Your Personal Style

Explore various influences, review past work, and participate in on-location assignments to pinpoint your unique style and solidify your photographic identity.

Understanding Visual Stories

Learn to select and approach stories that will stand out visually, enriching your images with deeper meaning and context

Crafting a Visual Language

Discussions on using elements like color, mood, and composition to bring your stories to life. Hands-on sessions will teach you how to use these elements effectively.

Advance Sequencing

Understand how to piece together photos for a seamless narrative, focusing on pacing and themes.

Techniques for a Cohesive Body of Work

Learn to incorporate themes, maintain visual consistency, utilize repetition, and apply intentional composition to enhance storytelling.

Constructive Criticism

Participate in both group and one-on-one feedback sessions in a supportive, non-competitive environment, fostering meaningful connections and personalized improvement.

Local Guides

Ludwig Van Borkum

Ludwig van Borkum lives and works in Munich as a photographer and a film and television creator. The camera is part of his daily life. It is always with him. Van Borkum’s view of the world is always through the lens of his camera. According to him, his pictures describe the relationship between his inner life and the external world. Van Borkum studied philosophy and originally dreamed of making films. However, since 2011, he has devoted himself intensively to photography. Real life is also part of his longterm project "German Langeweile," which photographically explores the peculiarities of everyday life and the people in his hometown of Munich.

Van Borkum is particularly fascinated by the Oktoberfest, where he has been capturing unique, funny, and sometimes absurd moments of the festival for years. His works have been shown in several solo exhibitions, including at the Munich club Goldener Reiter in 2019 and the Riviera Record Store in 2022. He is also an active member of the “Munich Street Collective.” Together with this collective, he has organized group exhibitions, including for The Roofs Festival 2022 in the Olympiapark and at Siemens in Munich.

His work is also highly valued in the music world, and he has designed several album covers, including two that reached the top of the German charts. Ludwig van Borkum never leaves the house without his camera. It is a silent companion that helps him see and capture the world in a special way. His photographs tell quiet stories that often say more than words ever could.

 
 

Agnes Burger

Agnes Burger was born in Lodz/Poland in 1978. The family emigrated to West Germany in1987. She studied Psychology and History of Art at the UCSB in Santa Barbara/California and then returned to Berlin to study Acting. As an actress she works both in front and behind the camera also as a voice actress and editor in the dubbing studios in Germany.

She developed her passion for photography very early on and often works as a set photographer on movie sets to do the behind the scenes" documentary. Her dedication to streetphotography began in 2019. Travelling too many cities around the world she collects impressions, moments and grotesque scenes from different cultures, always with the aspect of humanity and emotional empathy.

I love these quiet moments that are only very short. I'm always looking for lost people in lost time" She is one of the curators of the Team @street_macadam and is doing the English lives interviewing renowned photographers since 2023. Also one of the curators of the Brotherhood page @street_me_up.

 
 

Vincenzo Barone

Vincenzo Barone is an Italian photographer who has been awarded in various photography competitions and published in numerous magazines. He is represented and works with the art gallery “Gallery A”. He organizes workshops and he is involved in the creation and organization of documentary photographic projects in collaboration with several cultural centers in France. Vincenzo is curator and does live interviews for “Street Macadam”. He is the founder of “Street Shadow Hub”
